“I am human, and therefore let nothing human be alien to me.”
Welcome! If you are here, you are probably considering seeking psychotherapy. Thank you for taking the time to explore whether I would be a good fit for you and your needs. I recognize the vulnerability it takes to reach out for help and the importance of picking the right provider.
I have three primary specialty areas of treatment: 1) ADHD in adolescents and adults, and the anxiety, depression, and emotion regulation difficulties that often accompany ADHD; 2) anxiety disorders, more broadly; and 3) existential concerns, including lack of fulfillment, values and meaning-making, and disconnection from self- and others. In addition, I conduct psychological testing for diagnostic clarification, with a specialty in mood and anxiety disorders, as well as ADHD.
My Approach:
Sadness, fear, disappointment, anger, loneliness, and lack of fulfillment are some of the painful and private experiences that people bring to therapy. By opening ourselves up to ourselves, new possibilities can emerge. Our time together will be conceptual and practical: we will work together to gain a deeper understanding of yourself, help you feel better, able to be more present and flexible, and live a life that feels more values-based, self-directed, less restricted by the past, and less fearful of the future. This process requires trust and safety. While working with me, you can expect to feel supported and respected.
My therapeutic approach is grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT). As appropriate, I also integrate elements of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure Therapy, and skills-training.
Professional:
I am a Licensed Psychologist and Professor of Psychology in the Master’s in Mental Health Counseling program at Brooklyn College and an affiliated faculty in the Clinical Psychology PhD program at Queens College. My research is focused on personal values, the shame associated with seeking psychological help, and emotion regulation. I earned my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Iowa State University and completed my advanced clinical training at the University of Pittsburgh. I have received training in a variety of settings, including university counseling centers, outpatient and inpatient hospitals, and primary care, cancer, and family medicine clinics.
